Dorothea Lange was a photographer during the 1900's she also was the first woman to Guggenhiem fellowship. During her early photographer years, she ran a portrait studio with her husband. The first time she started documentary photographer was in 1920 when she travelled around the south west, she was mostly photographing Native Americans. The pictures below are some of my favourite off her work these 5 pieces are the best out of the thousands of photos she had taken during her work life. The main reason I enjoy these photos than the rest of the others is every photo shows a face and this face tells a story, the man in the car looks worried, anxious like something is going on. It makes the viewer feel scared for the man since they do not know why his facial expressions are like this. However, the fifth photo and the biggest one is the best out of the five, this picture is mesmerizing to look at. This picture is named "Migrant Mother" and it’s clear why, the woman and her children look like they are homeless. They look very brittle as if they have no strength. The fact you cannot see the children but only get the impression of them hiding behind their mother afraid to look at the outside world scares and makes the viewer upset. The focus of the photo is on the mothers face and this is very effective, you can see the desperation on her face worried for the lives off her children not knowing what will happen to them. The focus is ecstatic and is clear and sharp throughout the photo and this affects the image you do not have to try to look around and try to make out what things are you see the expression of her face you see the raggedy clothes she is wearing, it is clear that they have been living on the streets for a while. This photograph really affects the viewer emotionally, you are worried about the woman and hoping for the best for her although you do not know what happened. It is clear this photo was meant to make you think about life and what you have compared to other people and this photograph does that superbly. Since this is used with a traditional format camera the picture can only be in monochrome however I believe this to work out better than if it was too be in colour, this is due to the emotional side you get from pictures being in black and white. To me colour insinuates happiness and this photo is not meant to show happiness, it is meant to show the desperate times people go through and how some people have to go through this with family. The children majorly affect this photo since people will care more about the children on the street than the woman.
